Purpose Seekers

I am known to be a “certified life purpose coach,” whatever that means.

If you ponder, fulminate, and spend hours of mental energy on the question, “What is my life’s purpose?” I hate to be the one to break it to you: YOU DON’T HAVE ONE!

If you want one, let me give you a simple formula that works every time:

STUDY WISDOM

SHARE WHAT YOU LEARN[1]

That’s it.

Feel free to modify that any way you want, but if you make that your mantra, you can’t go wrong.

Wisdom can be any flavor you wish:

Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, secular;

the methodology of Socrates;

Aristotle’s golden mean;

Solomon’s criteria for custody disputes;

the practical wisdom of Benjamin Franklin, Confucius, Buddha, Epictetus, Stephen Covey or Don Miguel Ruiz;

the metaphysics of non-dualistic Hindus;

the belly-laughter sagacity of Yogi Berra, George Carlin, Richard Pryor, and George Burns & Gracie Allen.

Wisdom is usually, but not always, meta.

Look down from your hot air balloon, spot a pattern, and describe it.

You’ve got wisdom.

No matter what your current belief system, it can’t hurt, and it just might help you make better decisions – because, at bedrock, wisdom is about decision-making – not just what your decisions are, but how you make them.

If you are a reader and need some direction, your first assignment is An Intentional Life: Five Foundations of Authenticity & Purpose by Lisa Kentgen, Ph.D.

How do you know you're in the Elder Zone? When your walker consistently outruns you.

Finally, never forget: even though you think your mind is in control, your urinary tract has the last word.
